Apprenticeships are ideal for school and college leavers who want an alternative to university, and people in work who want to extend their professional qualifications and business skills.

An apprenticeship is a nationally recognised qualification that you can study while you work. It offers a combination of relevant work experience, achievement of a professional qualification and the development of skills and behaviours required to be a competent professional in your chosen field. At BDO this relates to becoming a professional Accountant or Tax professional. Candidates who hold an undergraduate degree are not eligible for this scheme, but are welcome to explore our graduate programmes.

You’ll join either our Audit&Assurance, Advisory, Tax or Business Services&Outsourcing department (we call them ‘streams’) where you’ll study for your professional qualification. During your programme you’ll have the opportunity to explore some of the different specialities within your stream, and potentially gain exposure to other areas of the business. This will allow you to grow your portfolio of skills, and experience a breadth of opportunity to increase your future options and build a platform to develop your career.

If you successfully complete an apprenticeship at BDO you will gain two qualifications/certifications: your professional qualification and the apprenticeship. At the same time, you’ll gain invaluable experience in a commercial environment, working on real business projects alongside leading industry professionals.

Take the BDO route to qualification

Our four-year School Leaver Programme allows you to combine work experience with professional qualifications. We provide you with training in relevant skills and behaviours, as well as the professional knowledge required for success in your role.

You’ll start with entry-level qualifications and progress to a professional qualification in your chosen area. If you pass all of your exams and complete your apprenticeship learning plan, within four years you’ll be a qualified accountant as well as achieving a Level 7 Accountancy/Taxation Professional Apprenticeship.*

*The Level 7 Accountancy/Taxation Professional Apprenticeship covers the following qualifications: ACA, ACA/CTA Joint Programme, CTA, ATT/CTA Tax Pathway qualification. The Level 4 Professional Accounting/Taxation Technician covers the AAT qualification.

Always there to support you

From day one you can count on an extensive network of support. We kick things off with an intensive one-day induction for around 400 new graduate and apprentice joiners. This is when we’ll introduce you to life at the firm. It’s your chance to get to know fellow trainees from across the UK, as well as several partners and managers, and begin building a strong network at BDO. You’ll also hear from the dedicated Professional Qualifications team who will support you during your first few years.

Induction continues back at your local office, where we’ll offer events and resources tailored to your specific area of work. Throughout the process you’ll have your own individual Counselling Manager. The Counselling Manager will monitor your progress, act as an information source and make sure you’ve been set appropriate work and clear objectives. They’ll help you settle in, find the best ways to meet the challenges you face and realise your full potential. You’ll also be assigned a buddy (a more experienced colleague) to support you through your professional exams.

Your training

We pay for every aspect of your professional training. This is conducted by external tutor firms, except for the CTA training part, which we offer in-house. We’ll make sure you have all the study time you need, along with support and extra tuition if you want it. Our excellent results speak for themselves – often up to 10% above the national average.

Training includes not only the specialist knowledge and practical tools you’ll need for your business area, but also a range of personal, management, client service and client-winning skills. Together, they’ll help you to become a fully rounded BDO adviser.

Who can apply?

To be considered for our apprenticeship programme, you need to have the following (or equivalent):

  • At least 3 A levels at grades A*– C, excluding General Studies and Extended Projects
  • A 9 – 4 in Maths and English at GCSE
  • Right to work in the UK (Visa Tier 4 qualifies)

As apprenticeships are funded from a government-based scheme, you cannot duplicate existing qualifications. This means you must not already have been educated to the same level in a similar discipline. Candidates who hold an undergraduate degree are not eligible for this scheme, but are welcome to explore our graduate programmes.

Please only apply for one programme.
